Mountains and Clouds by Alexander Calder - designed in 1976, completed in 1986. But the environment? The atrium of the Hart Senate Building in D.C.! This really pulls in two different directions…our first take - it’s an ambivalent alien form that has landed in an administrative space, grown to take that space up entirely, but then it breaks out and conquer the world…or, it’s a great example of public space art! It’s an impressive inspiring work, the scale is fantastic, but the venue is all, all wrong…
p.s. - it’s not wrong if it’s a dada-ist outburst in an inappropriate arena - and that last image was directly inspired by The Shining. (image concept by the ww)
